I’m Right Here

They have their occasional arguments, but all in all—he’s a really good big brother.

Bryce and Haven were spending the weekend with us (Nana and Pawpaw) while Mama and Dada went on a short trip. And as he had done on so many other occasions, Bryce said some things that made me go “hmmmm” over the deep spiritual insight. I have affectionately coined his wisdom as “Bryceisms” and always look forward to more of them when we spend time together.

At this time, Bryce is eight and Haven is three. Haven normally sleeps in my “nursery bedroom,” which is a small room that has a crib, a toddler bed, and a rocking chair. It’s where the littles sleep for naps or overnight stays. But since Haven had graduated to a big girl bed at home, this time she asked to sleep on the bunk bed in the same room with Bryce instead of in the “baby room.”

I sat on the floor by the bunkbed, surrounded by Superhero posters and action figures, Bryce’s obsession when I had decorated the room a few years before. Haven lay on the bottom bunk, and Bryce had now graduated to the top bunk. We had brushed teeth, said bedtime prayers, turned on the night-light, given goodnight hugs, and I headed out to go downstairs.

But I paused for a moment to eavesdrop outside the closed door as I heard Bryce talking to Haven. Curious about what he was saying, I listened as I detected his big-brother authoritative tone. His words melted my heart.

“Haven,” he said, “You don’t have to be scared because I’m right here. If you need anything, just let me know. I left the bathroom light on for you so you can find your way. You are going to be just fine.”

My heart swelled with pride for my compassionate grandson who seemed suddenly so grown-up. I pondered his words as I sat on the couch downstairs. Doesn’t God give us the same message of encouragement over and over in His Word?

I don’t have to be afraid because He is right here.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” (Psalm 23:4).

“…Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go,” (Joshua 1:9).

If I need anything, I can let him know. (And He already knows!)

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 4:19).

“Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear,” (Isaiah 65:24).

He helps me find my way and gives the light of His Word for direction.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you,” (Psalm 32:8).

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light on my path,” (Psalm 119:105).

I am going to be just fine because I have Him.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid,” (John 14:27).

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you,” (Isaiah 26:3).

Bryce will most likely become a father himself someday. And if that happens, I believe he will be a good one because he has a good example in his own father. Most importantly, he has a Heavenly Father Who is teaching and guiding him already, molding him into the image of Christ. It’s an extra treat when I get to see it happening even now before my eyes!

Reflection:

Have you ever had trouble sleeping because your mind was clouded with worry or fear? Try memorizing one of those Scriptures and focus on it instead.

Are you truly carrying your concerns to God in prayer? Even though He already knows our troubles, He wants us to ask Him for help.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for caring about every detail of my life and for being right beside me to guide and protect me. Help me to trust you and find peace in your presence instead of worrying about the future. Remind me that You are my source of comfort to calm all my fears. Amen.
