It was mesmerizing. Watching the ocean waves flow back and forth and listening to the soft crash of the surf brought some much-needed relaxation to my soul. It is so peaceful at the beach as the sun is just beginning to rise in the wee hours of the morning.
It always amazes me that our Great Creator God Elohim has set boundaries for those oceans to obey. He says in Job 38, “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, “This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt?”
As powerful as that mighty ocean is, there is One much more powerful—the One who created it all. And just as the moon’s gravitational pull is like a magnet, continually pulling the ocean and drawing it in to create the tides, our powerful Creator is pulling us in, too. Like a holy magnet, God is drawing us to Himself.
God created us with a spirit that is uniquely designed to know that He exists. Romans 1:20 states, For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” The ocean I enjoyed on my vacation was shouting to the existence of God, drawing me in to worship Him.
There are things that can interrupt a magnetic field. A common one is the presence of moisture, causing rust and corrosion that can disrupt the response of an object to the magnetic pull. In the same way, the rust and corrosion of sin in our lives can weaken the response of our soul to God’s continual drawing us to Himself.
As I was watching the ocean and pondering these thoughts during my vacation, another principle became evident— the principle of evaporation. The ocean stays within its boundaries because God created the force of gravity, but He also created the fundamental force of evaporation, transforming the water into a gaseous state from the heat of the sun. Pretty amazing to think about.
During evaporation, impurities like salts and minerals are left behind. The water vapor that forms and rises is relatively free from those contaminants.
Now here is the cool spiritual parallel….
God created a way to remove the impurities from our soul as well. The water doesn’t do anything to remove its own impurities. The heat of the SUN does it all. We can’t do a thing to remove the sin that contaminates our soul. But the SON does it all. We can’t be cleansed by our own efforts, but it is a work of the SON in us. He removes the contaminant of sin through the cleansing agent of His blood. It is by His holy plan of purification that our heart becomes cleansed from contamination as we surrender it to Him.
As the water in the ocean begins to evaporate, the vapor moves toward the SUN, becoming more pure.
May we move closer to the Son, surrendering our hearts daily, so that He can continue to purify us.
My God
My God is like the blazing sun,
Shining bright on all I’ve done,
Revealing corners dark and buried,
Smiling when my sin is carried
To the cross with faith and trust,
So He can clean the scum and dust
And leave me with a heart brand new
To seek His light in all I do.
My God is like the ocean tide.
He draws me closer to His side,
Demanding all, yet giving more,
Like waves that wash upon the shore.
To deeper waters He’s drawing me,
Sometimes to storms upon the sea.
When the waves are crashing, and I see no quell,
He stays with me, and my soul is well.
